ISO 9001:2026 was published in September 2026. The three-year transition period is now running: certificates against ISO 9001:2015 are expected to lose their validity in September 2029. In our earlier article we described what changes in substance. This article covers the practical side: how do you approach the transition step by step in uComply, and how do you avoid duplicate work if you already manage ISO 27001 or NEN 7510 (the Dutch healthcare information security standard) in the same environment?

Why the transition need not be a new project

The Harmonized Structure of ISO 9001:2026 is unchanged. Context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement: these are the same chapters as in ISO 27001 and NEN 7510. Anyone already managing one of those standards in uComply therefore has the building blocks the quality standard also requires: a context analysis, an overview of interested parties, a risk register, a management review, an internal audit programme and document management.

The emphases of the 2026 edition touch precisely those shared elements. A more explicit role for top management and quality culture, a stronger link between context and strategy, climate and sustainability as a context factor, attention to digitalisation and emerging technology, clarified terminology and an informative implementation annex. Not a new system, then, but greater depth on elements you already have. The transition therefore consists mainly of updating and demonstrating, not of rebuilding.

Step-by-step plan: from gap analysis to transition audit

Step 1: bring the new version of the standard alongside the old one

In uComply you manage standards as separate structures. Place the ISO 9001 standard structure of the 2026 edition next to that of 2015. This shows you, clause by clause, what has changed, while your existing records remain intact. Controls exist only once in uComply and are linked to several requirements; the link to the 2015 text remains valid until the transition audit is completed.

Step 2: gap analysis per clause

When you activate a standard alongside your existing ones, uComply shows which requirements are already covered by existing controls, which requirements have no linked control yet and where additions are needed. For the 2026 transition the picture is usually reassuring: most requirements are already covered. The gaps concentrate around leadership, context and emerging risks. Record each gap as an improvement action with an owner and a deadline, so the transition plan is measurable from day one.

Step 3: update context, interested parties, risks and opportunities

Add climate change, sustainability and digitalisation to the context analysis and assess, with reasoning, whether they are relevant to your quality objectives. If you already work with ISO 27001 in uComply, you manage context and interested parties once and use them for both standards. In the shared risk register you sharpen the distinction between risks and opportunities and include emerging technology as a risk or an opportunity.

Step 4: make quality culture and leadership demonstrable

Top management must actively promote a quality culture and ethical conduct. An auditor wants to see how that happens. Revise the quality policy, make quality culture a standing item in the management review and record the communication to employees. In uComply you link policy and management review to the relevant requirements, so the evidence is ready the moment it is requested.

Step 5: update documents and processes with version control

Review the quality manual, procedures and work instructions for the clarified terminology and for references to clauses. You manage documents within your own Microsoft 365 environment with version control, so the old and new versions remain traceable side by side and the auditor can follow the change history.

Step 6: internal audit against the 2026 text

Plan an internal audit against the new text of the standard before the certification body visits. If you work with an integrated audit programme, combine it with the internal audit for ISO 27001 or NEN 7510. Findings become improvement actions with an owner and a deadline, and follow-up is immediately visible.

Step 7: schedule the transition audit with the certification body

The transition audit is usually combined with a regular surveillance or recertification audit. Choose the audit moment, agree with your certification body what the auditor wants to see beforehand and set Reminders on the milestones: gap analysis complete, management review held, internal audit performed, evidence complete.

How uComply helps

uComply is built for exactly this situation: several standards in one management system, without duplicate documentation. Controls exist once and you link them to the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 simultaneously. The gap analysis shows immediately which requirements of the 2026 edition are already covered and where work remains.

You manage the context analysis, the interested-party analysis, the risk register and the management review once for all standards. That is exactly what ISO 9001:2026 asks for: one coherent picture of context, strategy and decision-making.

Every step in the transition plan becomes an improvement action with an owner and a deadline. uComply Reminders notifies task owners in a building cadence ahead of the deadline, and you schedule recurring tasks such as internal audits and management reviews as a series. In the Flightdeck dashboard you follow progress per standard, the status of controls and open findings. The uComply AI Consultant helps you interpret the new requirements in the context of your own controls.

Summary

The move to ISO 9001:2026 is not a new implementation project but a structured update of what you already have. Place the new version next to the old one, run a gap analysis, update context, leadership and documentation, test with an internal audit and schedule the transition audit. If you already manage ISO 27001 or NEN 7510 in uComply, you do most of the work only once.
